We, the citizens! Constitution and it’s people, instructor Nina Belyaeva
This course was designed and originally taught in Russian, as the target group for it were Russian-speaking relocants in Batumi.
For the Summer Semester, 2025, this course will be taught in English, together with the similar course – “We, the people!” at Harvard University, as a Nomad University contribution to the campaign of SOLIDARITY with Harvard University, resisting illegal attacks on freedom of education from current US Administration.
Course Summary
You will learn how to read the Constitution of any state, understand the structure of state power in the country, comply with laws, and exercise your civil rights.
Class Topics
1. Law: concept, essence, development of institutions. In whose interests does the law “work” ?
2. Separation of powers in the system of checks and balances. Examples of different constitutions and political regimes.
3. The judiciary in the system of separation of powers. The judicial system in Georgia, Russian Federation, the USA.
4. Constitutional rights and freedoms: implementation and protection. Political freedoms – of speech, association and assembly. Cases from Russian Federation, Georgia, the USA.
5. Modern human rights protection at the local, national and international levels. International campaigns to protect rights in a particular country.
About the teacher
– LLM with honors from the Law School of Moscow State University
-Defended first PhD at Russian Academy of Sciences “Political activity of public associations in the USSR and its legal protection
– Defended second PhD Thesis at Torino University Law School “Legal Transplants and Policy Transfers in Regulating Freedom of Assembly in Russian legal history – from 15-the century till 2012″
